Google Chrome App Developer Challenge July 5 – September 30, 2014

Create a Chrome based app that helps children aged between 6-10 years read better. The app should address one or more of the following three reading themes, Decoding ( the ability to put together letters and sounds to form words), Comprehension ( the ability to understand and relate to what one is reading) and Reading for Joy (the ability to take interest in the act of reading).

Who Can Apply?

App developers: Enthusiastic and experienced app developers who are interested in developing Chrome apps and/or getting involved in the ed-tech space.

Content Providers: Innovative content creators, who understand the reading needs of children and would like their content to reach a larger audience.

Mentors: Experts from the field of Early Reading and User Interface Design along with Edu App users who feel that their inputs could contribute to the user experience of the App. See here for mentors who’ve already joined!

Rewards

The team that designs the best App will be gifted a Chromebook by Google.
Top Three Apps will be featured on the Google Chrome Webstore for a period of three months.
The winners will also be felicitated at an award ceremony by USAID ‘s READ Alliance. In addition to this, READ Alliance will explore engagements with implementation partners to facilitate the piloting of the winning apps amongst children from underprivileged or marginalized communities.

Important Dates

18th , July 2014: Online submission of team composition, choice of problem statement and content selection where shortlisted entrants formally register for the challenge and courier 2 signed copies of the terms and conditions document. Click here for the registration form.

25th , July 2014: Online preliminary submission of concepts by entrants for Review. If a concept is found to deviate from the Hackathon theme, READ Alliance holds the right to disqualify the entry. Template for the submission shall be available on the website by 16th July.

Weekly READ Alliance Mentorship shall be provided in the form of weekly interactions to take place every Friday between READ Alliance members and entrants post preliminary submission and till final submission. Entrants may contact the READ team before preliminary submission for case to case mentorship. If in case expert inputs are needed, READ Alliance shall coordinate with Mentors or link them with entrants.

31st , August 2014: Submission of Final App to be done by entrants through an online portal. No entry submitted post 11:59pm will be shortlisted.

12th , September, 2014: Announcement of Shortlisted Apps on this webpage.

30th, September, 2014: Announcement of Final Winners on this webpage.
